Whenever a major prize-giving event nears, there’s always a demand for introducing additional classifications to honor overlooked contributions and delight the passions of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.
A fellow writer previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. Equally deserving are board games, representing someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front just as with other single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal remains most pressing and important of all. Here's the proposal: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Categorizing Game Types
Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that movie academies avoid this approach. However, it represents a necessary evil in the world of video games, which are so diverse they hardly constitute a single creative category.
For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.
Existing Game Classification System
The major gaming awards currently feature award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these classifications actually cover a lot of ground, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.
Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles in a particular game, intense tile-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.
Recognition Challenges
Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers published annually lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging Indie races.
- One classic puzzle game got overlooked for anything during that awards season
- Another creative title missed out that year
- Popular arranging title was overlooked recently
- Only a few puzzle games managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications
Significance of Puzzle Games
Commonly they're compact experiences, but the art in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games stand as most engaged experiences globally continuing this trend for an extended period.
The iconic tile-matching title competes with famous sandbox experiences competing to become best-selling game of all time; it also contends for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, while interacting across multiple categories.
Proposal and Rationale
Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. You could fill multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.
And to reiterate, these represent titles that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers are working at the demanding boundary of video game design, creating some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Similar to film action specialists, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
