The US central bank reduced borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second reduction this year amid financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.
Move Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank
The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.
Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Shifts
In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release reads. “Inflation has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”
Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job
The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.
Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions
The Fed usually analyzes labor statistics to assess employment trends, such as the number of new jobs added to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in early September, before the closure, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in August.
The number of positions created to the market in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.
Private Data Show Continued Decline
Though BLS was set to release September’s employment data in early October, it halted its release when the shutdown started. Employment data company ADP indicated earlier this month that the business segment cut 32,000 jobs in September, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.
“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman said earlier this month, which he had earlier said comes from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Shows Gradual Increase
Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still released its price statistics for last month that indicated that costs are rising, although slowly. Costs rose three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In April, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
