The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans involved in combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted individuals that were at the heart of efforts to enact legislation governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and Europe.
