RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside French aircraft in a coordinated attack against an underground arms cache in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, according to the UK's MoD.

The location, pinpointed through intelligence, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a several entry passages down to the depot... initial indications suggest the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the strike on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - alternatively referred to as Daesh - enforced militant control over parts of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation underscores our UK leadership, and determination to operate in unison with our allies, to eliminate any revival of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," the British Defence Secretary the minister said.

UK warplanes have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State following its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to every member of the UK armed forces participating in this strike for their professionalism and their valour," he said. "They were among a great many British troops deployed over the holidays. This operation, to remove terrorist threats who endanger our way of life, highlights how UK forces are prepared to act, all year round, protecting the UK within its borders and powerful internationally."

Last December, the United States armed forces executed what it called a "large-scale strike" against IS targets in Syria, subsequent to an assault claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The UN says Islamic State still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Syria and Iraq.
